Sreedhara Panicker Somanath, born in July 1963, is an Indian aerospace engineer. He was born in Thuravoor, Kerala, to a Malayali family. His parents are Sreedhara Panicker, who was a Hindi teacher, and Thankamma.

Dr. S. Somanath is from Alappuzha in Kerala, India. He really liked science when he was in school, where they taught in Malayalam. Even though his dad taught Hindi, he gave Somanath science books in Malayalam and English because he liked science. Somanath chose to study Mechanical Engineering even though it was hard. This is when he got even more interested in space science and research.

Somanath went to St. Augustine’s High School in Aroor. He finished his pre-university studies at Maharaja’s College in Ernakulam. He got a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. He focused on how things move and are controlled. After that, he got another degree in mechanical engineering from Thangal Kunju Musaliar College of Engineering in Kollam, at Kerala University.

He started working at ISRO in 1985 at a place called Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). This is where they make rockets. He helped put together the PSLV rocket. In 2003, he joined a project called GSLV MkIII. He moved up and became the Deputy Project Director. This means he was in charge of designing and putting together India’s heaviest and most powerful rocket.

Somanath also became a director at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Center and the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram. He’s famous for helping design rockets, especially how they’re built and how they move.

He did some important things. He led the making of a strong engine for rockets. He also helped make engines for Chandrayaan-2, which went to the moon. Another success was launching the GSAT-9 satellite using electric power. He got a gold medal from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore for his work in Aerospace Engineering.

On January 12, 2022, S. Somnath became the leader of the Indian Space Research Organisation. People who like ISRO and science were excited to see more research missions under him.

He was in charge of ISRO’s VSSC until January 12, 2022, and then he became the boss of ISRO. Dr. S. Somnath has been ISRO’s leader for a year now and he’s doing a good job. With his guidance, India launched Chandrayaan-3 successfully.

S Somanath is married to Valsala, and they have two children. His wife works with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department, which is part of the Ministry of Finance. Both of their kids finished their studies in Engineering.
